White Point Creative’s owner and lead designer, Lizzy, currently works out of Fredericksburg but grew up surfing in Charleston, SC. Married to the love of her life, Joe, they live for time outdoors and finding the best brunch spots with their pups Folly & Daisy.
Now I know what you’re probably thinking…
“I’m just a small time operation.”
“Designers and professionals like them, are expensive! I can’t afford that.”“I’m too small or local for anyone to want to work with.”
“I don’t really see the need, I’m doing just fine.”
These questions pop up time and time again when I speak with local small businesses about their design needs. But I am here to tell you, politely, you are wrong. Here is why!
We live in a visual world. Netflix. Instagram. Pinterest. Facebook. Cable. Which means businesses have to put their best visual foot forward if they want to stand a fighting chance. Local charm, one-of-a-kind uniqueness, steady regular crowd will only take you some of the way. We no longer live in a day and age where Zagat rules the restaurant world instead Google Reviews. Your social media profiles, Google reviews, website landing page and shop logo is what grabs the attention and helps make you memorable.
I have no doubt that your burger is the absolute best in all the state, but if a potential customer goes to find directions to your place on Google Maps and sees a 3 star average review, they are going to think twice about going. They will likely read those reviews and then go find another burger joint. Now let’s say you are able to get those customers into your parking lot but they are met with confusing parking signs and then once they’re inside your door, they’re met with even more frustrating seating signage so they don’t know whether they should seat themselves or not. Now you have hungry customers questioning why they came. Now your customers are finally seated but when they open the menu they are met with wild colors, five different fonts and prices hidden between the food pictures and grease stains. I can say with confidence those customers will finish their meal, tip little to nothing and never come back to your burger joint. And likely pile onto the poor reviews on Google.
What does this burger scenario have to do with hiring a designer? Everything! From the confusing parking sings, unclear internal signage and disorienting menu these are all pieces of art that should be designed by a professional. A professional who can help your business grow exponentially not only online but even in-store and on-site. If customers today are not visually drawn to your business, your bottom line is being hurt. If you’re a little boutique lined up on a block of other stores and your logo is not on point and descriptive of what you do/sell then people are less likely to spend their time walking around your store. They will either be drawn into a store with an interesting window display, logo and promotion or find a logo they are familiar with (Crate & Barrel, Five Guys, Target…etc.) and that they know they can trust.
Hiring a professional designer is a big deal. It’s a financial commitment, a time commitment and a touch of risk. Your business is important to you, it’s very personal and the idea of taking a leap of faith when the bottom line is low, your patience is thin and you’re just feeling pessimistic is understandably unappealing. However, I am here to tell you it’s never been a better time.
Say what? Lizzy, you’re telling me that when my finances are tight, my work/family life balance is a mess and I just don’t have the energy, it’s the best time to invest in a professional? Yes. Absolutely yes. Here is why:
